American living in Wuhan... This piece perfectly encapsulates what I try to convey to my friends in America, who almost all view China as this Commie power that succeeds through sheer connivance. I explain that while Commie talking points show up from time to time, no one on the ground pays much attention, and that the Chinese are the most hard wired for capitalist, entrepreneurial competition folks on Earth. I try to explain differences that, while Americans repeat like broken records the same talking points that are at best tangential to the primary issues, Chinese get up, shrug off what was yesterday, and go to work. Combine that with the deepest bench imaginable, and the term "competitive juggernaut" comes to mind. Maybe a few hiccups here and there, but after the hiccup, it's get up, go to work, and continue juggernaut-ing.

It's a choice. Americans don't yet understand that Chinese choose to compete, and they're really good at it.

Excellent piece, btw. Brilliant. I just stumbled on you in here. I'll be back.
